Nowadays it seems more of a punk & emo haven, but back in the day I saw the Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, Macha & other late 90s/early 00s Elephant 6 psych rock Gods descend from on high (aka nearby Athens, GA). WUSC (the University of South Carolina's radio station) would sponsor a lot of shows at the NBT. A couple of WUSC kids wound up buying the place about a year after I moved out of town, & I'm not sure what became of it, but I know it's still open & I know of at least one friend I went to school with who still has a hand in it.

So...what to say about this hole-in-the-wall joint other than that this place is amazing! I've been to a few concerts here and every time the experience has been enjoyable. On this night was came to see We Came As Romans. This place gets very loud when bands are playing and extremely hot. But people don't come here because of the way the venue looks like, they come for what has become Columbia's hub for the underground music scene and to see national acts that play imitate venues. I advise anyone wanting to go to a show here get their ticket in advance. The bands put on a great show. Be warned moshing is a big part of shows here, so don't go in the pit unless you want to be a part of it. Overall, if you want to check out some great bands and have a great time check it out. Just expect to have a unique, but a great experience! Plus many of the shows are less than $15 so it is a low cost way to have fun for a night.

I used to be a big fan of New Brookland. A lot of my favorite South Carolina bands play here so I find myself at NBT from time to time. Yes, the place is unbearably hot, the bathrooms are filthy and most of the bartenders are slow but drinks are cheap, they get some good bands that come through there and ticket prices are always low. But the last time I went was to see SUSTO and it was a disaster. One of the bartenders was drunk, there was a homeless man wandering around the club harassing people (which the bouncer just laughed about), you couldn't understand anything coming out of the sound system and my friends and I sat at the bar waiting for SUSTO to go on and 3 hours after they were scheduled to go on and still hadn't hit the stage, we left with a bad taste in our mouths.

I've been drinking here, seeing live music here, and playing music here for close to 20 years. From being a young punk rock kid going to all ages shows, to being a middle thirty something looking for a cheap drink and some live tunes I can't stay away. It's a dirty dive bar but that is exactly what I want when I'm coming to see bands that will be on MTV in a few years. They're always willing to give new local acts a chance to play and if you draw enough they'll have you opening for regional and national acts in no time. The staff is always great. JENN HARBIN is the best bartender on that side of the river! Don't judge a book by its cover, and come in and have a cheap PBR or a great craft beer. PS: the cover would be prettier if the City of West Columbia would stop the hate machine against NBT. BEST LIVE MUSIC VENUE IN SC!!!

Solid (and DARK) bar. We went for the first time last night to see a few local bands. Because the windows are boarded up, you walk inside and it feels like it's got to be night time. It's a cool vibe though. Grungy and laid back. There's a pool table in the middle and drink prices are very decent. I'm not sure what their typical clientele is, but there were all sorts of folks there last night. It's a cool place that feels homey and big-city, all in one.

Great staff. Fair drink prices. Great home for what's growing in Columbia's underground music scene.
